- Accounting Teaching Online Monitoring System (ATOMs)
With the accomplishment of the implementation project, the MOE wanted to gauge
and monitor the teachers usage on the software provided. CBL proposed the
creation of an online platform where school teachers could access and answer
questions online while the MOE administrators monitor and collect feedbacks
electronically.
The launching of the portal http://www.atoms.net.my was geared to capture from
schools, the problems the teachers faced and other findings about the software.
- Mapping of the SPM Principles of Accounting Syllabus and ASSETBase Ver 2
As a guide to teachers to match the ASSETBase Ver 2 contents to the SPM Principle
of Accounting syllabus, CBL conducted a mapping exercise and provided copies for
reference as well as distributed CDs for participating schools.
- Bridgeworks
CBL had set up a dedicated phone line and Internet service where trained personnel
and support officers would attend to teachers’ problems regarding the use of ASSETBase.
- Lesson Plan Competition
The competition was proposed to address the problem of the lack of experience and
skills to integrate ICT tools into the teaching delivery. In this competition
teachers were invited to design a new lesson plan to integrate ASSETBase with the
Principle of Accounting subject in schools which could be used as a benchmark for
the Ministry to develop a more comprehensive teaching module for the subject matter.
- Symposium and Official Launching of the Tryout Project to Integrate
ASSETBase into the Principles of Accounting SPM Curriculum Lesson Plan Competition
The symposium was jointly organized by CBL and MOE to honour the winners of the
Lesson Plan competition as well as the panel of judges and to officially announce
the launching of the Tryout Project to Integrate ASSETBase into the Principles of
Accounting SPM Curriculum. 140 schools were selected by MOE to participate in this
project.
- Refresher Training
Considering that some teachers have yet to assimilate the ASSETBase software into
their daily lessons, a refresher training course on the software were provided to
teachers from participating schools. The re-training, complemented with teaching
modules, was to ensure that teachers were equipped pedagogically.
- Double certification
The changes in the Principles of Accounting curriculum marked a significant push
in the standard of accounting education in the country to become more relevant to
accounting practice and industry needs. The outcome of learning now no longer is
limited to knowledge acquisition but also to that of skill development in addition
to value creation.
The MOE’s endeavour towards enhancing the quality of accounting education at the
school levels have earned the conviction of the ACCA and the LCCI to formally
recognize the potential of the students to be produced. A testimony of the
confidence and endorsement of the improvement to be brought about through the
transformation in the accounting education process, the ACCA and the LCCI have
agreed to the double certification program.
In essence, this means that students who successfully complete their SPM examination
at a certain level of achievement in the Principles of Accounting subject and English
requirement have the option to be awarded with another certificate equating to the
ACCA CAT syllabus Paper 1 and Paper 2 and LCCI Level 1 and Level 2 examinations.
This double certification acts as a culmination of the earlier introduction of ICT
into the accounting curriculum effort more specifically through the use of the ASSETBase
software.
It is hoped this new way forward for accounting education in the country will bring
value-add, relevance and marketability to students both in profession and higher
education as envisaged in the National Education Blue Print 2006 – 2010.
